Most of the heroes in his works are of Jewish origin, and the main themes treated in them involve the individual's struggle with the conventions of the society that envelops him. In the Weimar Republic era, he was one of the most popular authors in Central Europe. Wassermann favoured the integration of Jews into German society and culture, ruled out Jewish national separatism of any kind, and opposed Zionism.
